We will be re-working this blog until after the first of the year due to excessive spam intrusions ...funny how blogs/ sites that involve the fight against violence against women seem to attract the worst of the worst.
May everyone have a peaceful and joyful holiday season!

Upcoming Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan Victim Rights Conferences Early 2010
In February we will be hosting two one-days on the subject of “Victims that Recant”. We will be bringing in Eaton County Prosecutor, Jeff Sauter. Jeff will do an in-depth discussion of victims most likely to recant (domestic).
We hope to bring in Melissa Pope from Oakland University to talk about LGBTQ victims that recant and the reasons why they do. The dates for Victims that Recant are: February 16, 2010 in Traverse City and February 18, 2010 at the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth. We are proud to announce that we will be offering Social Worker CEU’s for this class and it will also be MCOLES registered.
MARCH
In the month of March we are going to try something new. We are going to have 2 one-day seminars and do 2 topics (each half day in length). We will be presenting on the topics of “Homelessness in Michigan” and “Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma”. We do not have the speakers confirmed yet. The 2 locations and dates for this seminar are: March 16, 2010 at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester and March 18, 2010 in Muskegon. This should make for a good topic since the rate of the homeless is increasing rapidly in Michigan due to the struggling economy. We will be offering Social Worker CEU’s for this presentation.

National Victim Assistance Academy
National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA V)
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) in the U.S. Department of Justice sponsors the National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA). The NVAA is comprised of education and skill-based classroom trainings for those who assist victims and survivors of crime. Following a formal evaluation in 2003, the NVAA was redesigned to better address the skills and abilities that are required of victim service professionals. The revised NVAA was launched in 2007 and includes three distinct tracks tailored to the needs of each participant. All three tracks will be offered during the week-long 2009 Academy. Participants are eligible to receive CEUs for their attendance and completion of Tracks 1, 2, or 3. Track 1, Foundation-Level Training, is a general training for those who have less than 3 years of experience serving crime victims. The goal of the foundation-level training is to provide entry-level professionals and volunteers with skills, knowledge, and resources to serve victims and survivors of crime more effectively. Track 2, Professional Skill-Building Institute, is designed to build skills and address several timely topics that confront victim service providers on a daily basis and that have direct impact on service providers’ work with victims. The training is targeted for those who have been in the victim services field for at least 2 years. Track 3, Leadership Institute, consists of courses on management issues, for example, leadership and strategic planning. Track 3 is intended to help victim service administrators and leaders develop and refine the skills and abilities needed to manage and sustain their victim service programs. For more information about the NVAA, consult the Fact Sheet on VAT Online, NVAA, and Other Training Offerings.
